paint colors: fall catalog 2010

For Fall 2010, we took a much different approach to how we used color in catalog photography. Our goal was to let the bold colors speak for themselves and create environments where they could pop.

About half of the book was shot on location where you’ll see textural brick walls, amazing single paned windows and subway tiles in a living room!

Another 20% of the photography was shot against Benjamin Moore’s “stone harbor”, BM 2111-50, which set the a dramatic mood for these living rooms.

For these bedroom shots, we used a soothing, lighter grey—“heaven” BM 2118-70.

Lower left: By using “yellow finch”, BM 2024-40, the odyssey dining table and hyde wall cabinets blended with the environment which created the perfect contrast for the blackened thor chairs to pop.

Lower right: Lastly, we used “universal black”, BM 2118-10, since the darkest shades create contrast and enhance colors that are near or against it. This is why the wood grain of the vice high dining table stands out—not to mention the red engine barstools.

on location: tryon farm

Tryon Farm, the outdoor site for CB2’s summer catalog, is a working, sustainable community for residents who see themselves as caretakers of the land—who value the simple joys of being in natural settings, care about the conservation and preservation of open space, and steward the wise use of resources.

The mission of Tryon Farm is to build and maintain a healthy environment, an energetic community, a nurturing home; and to protect or re-establish mainstays of the regional landscape—farmlands, woods, prairies, wetlands.

Originally a 170-acre dairy farm in northwest Indiana, new simple houses and lofts are clustered in seven “settlements”. From farmstead to woods to meadows, each is distinct—defined by its natural elements.

For example, the Farmstead settlement comprises the farmhouse, barns and sheds that were the original farm, and in the Pond settlement, homes recede into the landscape near a pond that’s a native habitat for frogs, minnows and herons.

To accomplish their goals, they insist on using clean sewer water for irrigation, controlling storm water, keeping night lighting low, minimizing road building—and their natural wetlands sewage system operates independently of a municipal system. Architects carefully design to the landscape so window placement takes full advantage of the sun for lighting and winds for ventilation—not to mention the beauty of expansive views.

One key aspect of any sustainable venture is the maintenance or repurposing of existing structures. So the old farmhouse was converted into a bed and breakfast and the barn is a community center for potluck suppers, association meetings and viewing old movies.

Regular and seasonal events are diverse and include workshops on conservation and planning of rural and urban areas, advice on organic gardening and landscaping, bicycle repair sessions, feeding goats and chickens, splitting wood for fires, and bonfire circle suppers.

Next Saturday, April 17, from 10am to 3pm, help plant 1,200 tree saplings as a windbreak on the edge of a rolling alfalfa field. Reward is an informal lunch in the old Tryon dairy barn with music, stories and a salute to Mother Earth. Register at Earth Day Tree Lunch.

paint colors: spring catalog 2010

So many have requested information about the paint colors we use in our catalog photography that we keep a running list for quick reference. Below are the key colors used in our spring catalog—all from Benjamin Moore.

Last but certainly not least, and since there are scores of whites out there, decorator’s white.

canine casting call

On average our 80-page catalogs feature 12 people and 2 dogs. We usually send out emails asking if associates have time and interest in modeling and it’s worked well so far. But as we prepared to shoot our Holiday catalog, we decided to try something new so we emailed a canine casting call.

MrHungryIt included strict guidelines—such as very dark colored dogs don’t photograph well, they must be well trained, ie. no tinklers or growlers, and of course they had to be pretty darn cute.          

The response was amazing—and hilarious—a total of 41 dogs, 3 cats, 1 child (in costume as a pup) and 1… mr.hungry.

How in the world could we decide—and not step on any paws in the process?! We stuck to our guns and edited the way we always do—with a strong focus. In the end, we chose 5 top dogs for the shoot so watch your mailbox for the final 2 that made the editors cut!

And the other 36? Most will get a call-back for the Spring catalog which goes on location next month!
