animal rescue: cassius

Nicknames: Cash-Money, Roast Beast.

Favorite Snacks: Carrots, Peanut butter, Smoothie leftovers.

Before he became famous: I found Cassius at the Chicago Animal Care and Control shelter—I was told it was his second time behind the CACC bars since his previous adopters had to return him.

He had already been housed at the shelter for over a month when I visited and things were looking grim for this energetic Lab/Pit—but fast forward 6 years, Cassius is still with me and very happy to share a home with two cats.

Hidden Talents: Despite his size—and 85lbs—Cassius thinks he makes for a fantastic lap dog… he is however very good at pulling me around Humboldt Park on my bicycle… raiding the recycling bin for plastic bottles he can chew on… sneaking on the couch when we’re not home.

Cat and dog adoption fast facts:
…every year approximately 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters.
…25% of adoptable dogs in animal shelters are purebred.
…adopting a dog or cat from the Humane Society, ASPCA—any rescue group—can save their life.
…and, being a pet owner can add years to your life too.

in memoriam: jimmy

jimmy, striking a pose, fall 2009 Jimmy was not only one of our first models—he inspired CB2 to raise awareness by featuring rescued animals in every catalog since.

After his first gig, Jimmy was “discovered” and actually went on to be a paid part-time model for JC Penney and CNA Insurance—and a total of 16 pets have been featured in our books.

Diagnosed with canine leukemia in January, he endured meds and our Chiberian winter to stay with us another 4 months—then quietly departed on May 14th, a sweet 16-year old.

He was an amazing dog with a great personality—so tidy and fastidious we used to say he was “the Tony Randall of dogs”. Jimmy was also lucky—to be part of a large and loving extended family who miss him greatly.

animal rescue: roger

Nicknames: Mr. Stinky—a term of endearment he acquired on day one.

Pet Peeves: Thunder and fireworks are two major ones.

Favorite Snack: Anything savory—especially roasted chicken and good Mexican food—but we keep him on a very healthy diet.

Before he was famous: In an email from the shelter, I saw a picture of this absolutely adorable dog sitting in a corner of a cage with such a sad look in his eyes. He was literally days away from being put down—those emails are always heart-wrenching but this time I knew I needed to do something.

The first time Randy went to see him, Roger went straight towards him, got up on his hind legs, and gave him a big hug and a kiss—pretty convincing that he should come to be with us but the shelter didn’t make it so easy.

He’s always in a wonderful mood, full of life, and he enjoys every single moment on this earth—we’ve learned so much from him!

I’ve had different kinds of dogs all my life, but pit bulls are amazing—intelligent, infinitely kind and compassionate, great athletes, strong willed, and the best travel companions you can possibly find. They’re also one of the few truly American breeds—all the characteristics we hope our Hi, I’m Roger! production company exemplifies by sharing his name.

animal rescue: leffe

Nicknames: Lef, Little Brew, Lil Bud

Before he was famous: Leffe was found running as a stray in Estill County, Kentucky where he was brought to the county’s high-kill animal control facility. From there he was transported up to Second City Canine Rescue in Medinah Illinois—where he was rescued and got a fresh start in a new home.

Talent Show: Playing “fetch!” and sniffing out anything you try to hide from him.

Favorite Snack: Anything peanut butter-y.

With a Winning Lottery Ticket: He’d buy a lifetime supply of his favorite squeaky ball—and rescue a playmate to fight with over them.

animal rescue: tesla

Nicknames: Tesla Rose is named for Nikola Tesla, the Serbian-American inventor/physicist best know for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electrical supply system—and the very cool Tesla Coil which emits high voltage electric discharges that create a pretty good light show.

Tesla’s middle name, Rose, comes from the movie Titanic. There’s a scene where Rose poses naked for Jack on a couch. Early on we realized Tess loved lying on her back for a good tummy rub—and her favorite place for it is on our red velvet couch. She sometimes even brings one of her front paws up over her head, similar to Kate Winslet’s pose!

Before she was famous: Tess is a 3 year old beagle/Australian shepherd mix. She was adopted in October 2011 from a P.A.W.S. shelter in Tinley Park. We don’t know much about her past, but just days before she was adopted, the P.A.W.S. staff found Tesla at a kill shelter in Indiana. She was a bit beat up with a split tongue and crooked jaw, and she had just had a litter of puppies. They brought her across the border to Illinois, where they were able to find her a loving home.

Talent Show: Tesla has lots of energy and loves to play with everyone. She likes nothing better than meeting new people—she gets so excited when someone new opens the door that she spins in circles and jumps up and down until they flip her on her back and give her a good scratch.

Tesla’s best friend is another beagle mix named Darwin. Tesla chases Darwin around and around the yard as fast as she can—and when Darwin finally lets her catch him, they wrestle for hours.

Favorite Snacks: Her favorite treats are peanut butter, deer hooves and fresh bones from her grandpa the hunter.
