animal rescue: cassius

Nicknames: Cash-Money, Roast Beast.

Favorite Snacks: Carrots, Peanut butter, Smoothie leftovers.

Before he became famous: I found Cassius at the Chicago Animal Care and Control shelter—I was told it was his second time behind the CACC bars since his previous adopters had to return him.

He had already been housed at the shelter for over a month when I visited and things were looking grim for this energetic Lab/Pit—but fast forward 6 years, Cassius is still with me and very happy to share a home with two cats.

Hidden Talents: Despite his size—and 85lbs—Cassius thinks he makes for a fantastic lap dog… he is however very good at pulling me around Humboldt Park on my bicycle… raiding the recycling bin for plastic bottles he can chew on… sneaking on the couch when we’re not home.

Cat and dog adoption fast facts:
…every year approximately 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters.
…25% of adoptable dogs in animal shelters are purebred.
…adopting a dog or cat from the Humane Society, ASPCA—any rescue group—can save their life.
…and, being a pet owner can add years to your life too.

in memoriam: jimmy

jimmy, striking a pose, fall 2009 Jimmy was not only one of our first models—he inspired CB2 to raise awareness by featuring rescued animals in every catalog since.

After his first gig, Jimmy was “discovered” and actually went on to be a paid part-time model for JC Penney and CNA Insurance—and a total of 16 pets have been featured in our books.

Diagnosed with canine leukemia in January, he endured meds and our Chiberian winter to stay with us another 4 months—then quietly departed on May 14th, a sweet 16-year old.

He was an amazing dog with a great personality—so tidy and fastidious we used to say he was “the Tony Randall of dogs”. Jimmy was also lucky—to be part of a large and loving extended family who miss him greatly.

animal rescue: ally

Before she was Famous: Ally was rescued as a puppy by Blackdog All Breed Dog Rescue after she was left at the city pound with two broken back legs. She was rehabilitated, adopted, and now lives in Uptown with her parents and an older sister, Miley, who is also a rescue.

Nicknames: Ally’s nickname is Ally-gator because of her big smile and her propensity for chewing up anything she can get her paws on.

Favorite Snack: A big rawhide bone.

Talent Show: Ally loves running at the Montrose dog beach, playing in the laundry hamper, wrestling with her older sister, and patrolling the neighborhood for squirrels and pigeons. But her best trick is tugging off people’s socks for them—whether they want them on or not!

animal rescue: lola

Just the facts: Lola was rescued with the help of Chicago Pit Stop Rescue and is just 18 months old.

Before she was discovered: Lola was roaming the streets as a stray dog so Animal Control gave her shelter. When they found her, she couldn’t use her front right leg—it’s possible she was hit by a car which shattered her shoulder. She got the medical care she needed, which included the necessary amputation of her leg, and was living with a foster family until we brought her home for the weekend—and that was that! Today, she has a trainer to help with her new transition to family life and is waiting for a cart that will allow her to be more active outside.

Nicknames: I call her Ms. Lolly—my husband often greets her with “rorry ro ro”, our kids refers to her as Snugglebug or Pooh Bear, and her walker affectionately calls her Lollipop because she loves to jump up and give you a kiss.

Favorite Snack: beef marrow bones, organic turkey breast—and nitrate free bacon.

Talent Show: using her puppy dog eyes to make you fall head over heels in love with her, and she has the gift of gab—very good at barking!

Favorite hangouts: snoring the day away on a bed and playing with her rockball in the backyard.

Guilty pleasure: a total belly rub Queen who would be content to lie by your side getting belly rubs until she falls asleep and snores like Grandpa.

animal rescue: etta

Just the facts: Etta is 8-1/2 years old but has the energy and sassiness of a puppy. Her days are filled with walks, hiding toys or rawhides around the house, playing with other dogs—and lots of naps.

Favorite toys: She cannot live without her elephant, zebra, or orange bone.

Before she was discovered: Etta was adopted from PAWS Chicago just a few months ago after being at another shelter in Illinois for several months. We don’t know why she was originally given up, but the original shelter transferred her to PAWS to increase her chances of being adopted.

Talent Show: Her most adorable and well known features are her long ears, her enormous paws and her very soulful but loud howl—similar to Etta James’ singing.

Nicknames: Since adopting her, several nicknames—including Noisy Noodle and Rowdy Rigatoni—
have been found to fit her personality.

Unfortunately, the photo shoot including Etta didn’t make the final cut. To her mom, it was nothing personal—we loved working with her!
