animal rescue: roger

Nicknames: Mr. Stinky—a term of endearment he acquired on day one.

Pet Peeves: Thunder and fireworks are two major ones.

Favorite Snack: Anything savory—especially roasted chicken and good Mexican food—but we keep him on a very healthy diet.

Before he was famous: In an email from the shelter, I saw a picture of this absolutely adorable dog sitting in a corner of a cage with such a sad look in his eyes. He was literally days away from being put down—those emails are always heart-wrenching but this time I knew I needed to do something.

The first time Randy went to see him, Roger went straight towards him, got up on his hind legs, and gave him a big hug and a kiss—pretty convincing that he should come to be with us but the shelter didn’t make it so easy.

He’s always in a wonderful mood, full of life, and he enjoys every single moment on this earth—we’ve learned so much from him!

I’ve had different kinds of dogs all my life, but pit bulls are amazing—intelligent, infinitely kind and compassionate, great athletes, strong willed, and the best travel companions you can possibly find. They’re also one of the few truly American breeds—all the characteristics we hope our Hi, I’m Roger! production company exemplifies by sharing his name.

Cat and dog adoption fast facts:
…approximately 4 million pet dogs and cats are euthanized each year due to overpopulation.
…25% of pet dogs euthanized in animal shelters are purebred.
…adopting a dog or cat from the Humane Society, ASPCA—any rescue group—can save their life.
…and, being a pet owner can add years to your life too.

milan 2014: monday

We’re thrilled to be back in Milan for the Salone—especially after this past (seemingly endless) winter!

The Duomo is sparkling after years of cleaning—the inside restoration is still in progress—and after Sunday’s flowerfest along the canal in Navigli, window boxes are colorful again. Just outside Zona Tortona, here we’ve discovered a new favorite watering hole, Pinch, where cocktails are crafted and where we’ve met new acquaintances we hope will become new friends.

Under the watch of Leonardo da Vinci—one of the greatest designers of all times—we can’t wait to see new innovations and inspirations. Stay tuned!

Where was your favorite place to live?
I’ve only ever lived in Ohio and Chicago and I would have to say Chicago is my favorite by far. I once heard someone say that Chicago is a serious metropolis in the middle of nowhere. I really liked that assessment and I think it lends a certain dimensionality to the people who live here. If Chicago was like it is in the summer year-round, then it would be completely blown out. But we suffer through the winter every year because we love it here.

What’s your favorite room in your home?
My favorite room is the dining room. We have a huge book shelf in there with all my design books, LP’s and little objects that I love.

What are your sources of inspiration?
Anything that captures the right mood at the right time - it can be the weather, a certain type of light, a skateboard photo, a song, a memory.

What are your interests outside of design?
Skateboarding, music, travel, nature, sharks, Chicago Bulls.

Who are your design icons?
David Hockney, Alex Katz, Charley Harper, Chris Ware, Geoff McFetridge.

In your opinion, what is the best designed item of all time?
It would have to be the skateboard. It’s so simple but you can do so many different tricks with it. It’s also a blank canvas and all the fantastic graphics from the 80s were some of my first visual influences.

Ryan Kapp What do you drive?
2000 Honda Civic, manual transmission.

What one item do you wish you owned?
One of those mod hanging fireplace orbs.

Form vs. function?
Can I have it both ways?

What is your personal decorating style?
Mostly Mid-Century Modern with personal objects thrown in.

What’s your favorite possession?
My semi-auto screen printing press.

What was/is your biggest indulgence?
Donuts & vintage action figures.

Do you have one low budget decorating tip?
Do-it-yourself framing—order frames online at wholesale prices and put everything together yourself to save on labor and mark-ups.

What’s the best career advice you ever received? Ever gave?
Best advice received: Try to do whatever it is you want to do so well that the rest takes care of itself. Best advice given: Don’t make life harder than it already is.
