special thanks to our hosts april and her husband brent for a great party saturday!

During this great recession, what better way to cheer up than cocktails with friends in thrifty wardrobes?

Valentine’s weekend was the perfect time to concoct a few gelatin dishes, mix a rum punch, break out the lipstick red pumps and pile coats on the bed.

From head to toe, CB2 creatives dug deep into their closets for powder blue prom dresses, ruffled tuxedo shirts, and rhinestone costume jewelry–guilt-free of buying new bling.

How to make it modern? Loud plaid pants, candy cigarettes and stemless martini glasses. These stackable glasses take up a tenth of the space of stemmed versions and each is at the ready for a martini, cosmopolitan, or scotch and soda–topped off with re-usable tipsy toes ice cubes.

It all started with a little buzz on January 15th 2000 when we opened the first CB2 store in a quiet neighborhood on the northside of Chicago.

Honestly, none of us knew what the heck we were doing–which probably made it easier than knowing the challenges we’d face as we grew. But on January 22nd, it ended with a little bash as we partied there for the last time. Word got out to previous team members who came to reminisce.
And for happily married couple Sandy and Joaquin,
it was a chance to celebrate the moment where they met 10 years ago.

We congratulate everyone for their heroic efforts to get CB2 off the ground. To everyone who helped us test and experiment in our “lab”, without you we wouldn’t be where we are today.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and look forward to seeing you at our other locations!

wine tasting party

Special thanks to adam, store manager chicago, who contributed to the following.

Now that the holidays are behind us, we either want to hibernate or continue the festivities. A wine tasting party could be the best of both worlds allowing everyone a chance to recap their experiences or visit with those they might have missed.

1. Invite as many as you’d like, just be prepared with the proper amount of score cards, brown bags, wine glasses and palette cleansers.

2. Choose a wine variety–be general or very specific. For example: just reds or California merlots under $15. How about just bottles received as hostess gifts?

3. As guests arrive, hide their wine in numbered bags and be sure no one else knows the numbers.

4. Hand out score cards. They can be generic with a 1-10 rating, 1=hate 10=love, but half the entertainment can be making it fun. For example, 1=wouldn’t cook mutton with it, 10= would trade my hybrid for a case! Make sure guests write their name on the card too. Hint: have scorers write in the total number of bottles being sampled. This way if you planned for 10 and only 8 arrived, guests won’t be looking for 2 non-existent bottles.

5. Make sure plenty of wine glasses are available–water and some light snacks to cleanse the pallet too. Choose foods wisely since some can effect the taste of the wine and result in undeservedly low scores. Have stainless bowls or wine buckets on hand for unwanted pourings–and let the tasting begin!

6. Take your time and smell the bouquets.

7. When everyone’s done, any bottles that are not empty can be consumed. Be sure to run over to your favorite number and get a glass!

8. Collect the cards and tally the numbers.

9. Announce the top 3 labels and award wine bearers with small gifts like a wine opener or decanter.

10. Return the score cards to each guest and email the list of wines the next day so they can track down what they liked.

Whether “your place for cocktails” is the warm up act for guests heading to another event or staying for dinner, following are 10 essentials to get you through the party before the party.

1. Set a swanky mood with lounge music and soft candlelight.

2. Once you’ve greeted guests, invite them to the acacia mini bar for something to drink.

3. Chill a stainless cocktail shaker with ice from a stainless ice bucket.

4. Measure libations and bitters with a double jigger for proper mixology.

5. Serve tall tom collins or serious scotches in tambien barware.

6. And serve flirty cocktails in chilled libertinis.

7. Garnish cocktails with twists, olives or onions from a nagoya 3-part server.

8. Graciously present every drink on a restaurant cocktail napkin.

No cocktail party is complete without light appetizers.
9. Simple cheeses and crackers can be artfully arranged on plato with basic cheese cutters.

10. Lastly, stacks of white porcelain appetizer plates and mini flatware ready for use gives you more time to make sure everyone’s drink is properly refreshed.

Hint: be sure to cover all your bases by having plenty of non-alcoholic recipes and mixers.
